Top 10 largest lake in India. 

From Kashmir to Kannyakumarika , the beautiful land is filled with many lakes. Most of the lakes in the country are sweet freshwater lakes. However, you can find many salt lakes, brackish water lakes and other types of lakes here. This includes the world’s largest and oldest Vent Lake, situated in Maharashtra.





Of all the beautiful & pleasant lakes in the country, here are the Top 10 Largest Lakes in India to visiting you .

1. Vembanad Lake.



State : Kerala

Type: Brackish and Freshwater

Square Area: 2033 square km

Depth: 12-13 m

This lake is located in three different districts of the state Kerala . This lake also shores the popular destination, Kumarakom. This lake is famous for backwater houseboating, pleasant, birdwatching, photography and others. The famous snake boat race, Nehru Trophy boat race and other  is conducted in the main attraction part of the lake. This year, the government has made many plans to start a league for boat race like IPL for cricket. (Source). 2. Chilika Lake.



State : Odisha

Type:  Almost salty.

Square Area: 1165 square km

Depth: 4.2-5.5 m

Around 52 floods make this large lake, making it the largest coastal lagoon of the country and the second largest in the world. During winter & early spring season, the land becomes the breeding ground for migration birds. Almost 132 and more villages rely on this lake for fishing. Main attraction in the lake is Nalaban Island, which is declared as a bird sanctuary. Apart from this, you will find Becon Island, Breakfast Island, Honeymoon Island, Birds’ Island, Parikud , pleasant island, and others. You can spot dolphins, enjoy scenic vacation, spot some monuments and take a tour through the lake on a boat.



3. Shivaji sagar lake. 



State : Maharashtra

Type: Artificial and freshwater

Square Area: 891.7 square km

Depth: 80-85 m

This lake is also called as Shivsagar Lake and was formed by damming the Koyna River. The lake provides a grand view for those who look for a picnic spot. Apart from this, this water source does not have any tourism activities. It is the 3rd largest lake in the India .


4th -Loktak.


About more than 55 km from Imphal, the state capital of Manipur lies the fantastic Loktak lake. The word ‘Loktak’ is derived from Lok (meaning ‘stream’) and Tak (meaning ‘the end’). Spanning an area of 287 sq km, Loktak lake is a largest freshwater lake in India.

This lake is most famous for its floating swamps, boating, known as phumdis in the local language. The Phumdis look like small islands that are formed as a collection of vegetation, soil and organic matter at various stages of decomposition.



5th - SARDAR SAROVAR LAKE.


The composition of Sardar Sarovar dam on the river Narmada near Navagam in Gujarat created the Sardar Sarovar lake (reservoir). It is one of the most beautiful & pleasant man-made lakes in India.

At a height of 160 m, Sardar Sarovar Dam is the third highest concrete dam in India after Bhakra (226 m) in Himachal Pradesh and Lakhwar (192 m) in Uttar Pradesh.

6th - PULICAT LAKE.




State : Andhra Pradesh & Tamil nadu.

Type : Brackish .

Square : 460 km.

Depth : 60 m.


At the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu lies the picturesque Pulicat lake. It is located roughly 60 km away from Chennai city and 14 km away from Sullurpeta, the nearest town to the lake.

Pulikat lake is one of the largest brackish water lakes in India. Area of the lake varies with the tide, from 450 sq km in high tide to 250 sq km in low tide.

Pulicat lagoon is India’s second largest brackish water lagoon after Chilika lake in Odisha. It is fed by the rivers Arani, Kalangi and Swarnamukhi. The lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal by the barrier island of Sriharikota.

More than 90% area of the lake comes Tamil Nadu.

Andhra Pradesh side of the lake houses a significant portion of the Pulicat lake bird sanctuary. The sanctuary boasts a rich diversity of waterbirds.

Pulicat lake is widely known for hosting migratory birds from far off places like Siberia and Mongolia. Greater flamingos, painted storks and pelicans are some of the commonly seen migratory birds here.


7th - Dal lake.



The Kashmir valley is blessed with exotic natural beauty of landscape and water bodies, out of them one of the best is Dal Lake. This is one of the most famous lakes in India and an icon of the Kashmir tourism industry.

Apart from the natural beauty, Dal Lake attractions are The floating gardens, colorful shikaras and houseboats. The east of Dal Lake was the residence of goddess Maa Durga. Depth : 8 - 10 m.

Lake Pichola is an artificial fresh water lake located in Udaipur city in Rajasthan. Udaipur is a beautiful city, set amidst the Aravalli Ranges of Rajasthan, India. Known for its picturesque lakes, Udaipur also called ‘the city of lakes.

The Lake Pichola, Udai Sagar Lake, Fateh Sagar Lake, Rajsamand Lake and Jaisamand Lake are the five prominent lakes of Udaipur. One of the most famous lake is Pushkar Lake, which is one of the major tourist attractions in the Royal State Rajasthan.

9th -  Wular Lake.


Location: Jammu and Kashmir

Type: Freshwater

Square Area: 260 square km

Depth: 14 m

This lake basin was formed by tectonic activities. The lake’s size changes seasonally and is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the continent. Apart from the natural beauty, this lake is famous for its rich population of terrestrial birds like Himalayan monal, common cuckoo, Himalayan woodpecker, golden oriole, rock dove and others. You can find many water sports including water skiing and boating in the lake. Picnicking is an important activity of honeymooners in this locality.


10th - KOLLERU LAKE.



Situated between Krishna and Godavari river deltas, Kolleru lake lies near the city of Eluru in Andhra Pradesh. The lake is fed by seasonal streams, namely Budameru and Tammileru.


Spanning an area of 245 sq km, it is one of the largest freshwater lakes in India. it is an important nesting and breeding site for millions of resident and migratory birds like painted stork and grey pelican.

Recognizing this, the lake was declared as a wildlife sanctuary, known as Atapaka Bird Sanctuary. This sanctuary is a birdwatcher’s paradise visited by many tourists every year.

From Eluru, the lake is almost 40 minutes drive. It is well connected by road from Thrissur and Kochi also.
